How do you explain a hydraulic system?
A basic hydraulic system is a type of drive technology that uses fluid to move energy from a motor to an actuator in industrial hydraulics. An example of an actuator is a hydraulic cylinder. These are used primarily where high power density is required or when there are rapid changes to load requirements, catering to the requirements of industrial and heavy-duty mobile equipment.
What is a hydraulic system and how does it work?
In basic hydraulics, there are different types of hydraulic systems, each containing the same main components and all designed to work the same way. There are 5 main components.
  • Hydraulic reservoir: This holds the hydraulic fluids (because of the importance of the role of fluid in hydraulics, hydraulics is sometimes referred to as ‘fluid power’.
  • Hydraulic pump: Pumps the fluid through the system, converting mechanical motion & energy into hydraulic power. A portable hydraulic pump performs the same task.
  • Electric motor: The motor is necessary to power the hydraulic pump, starting the entire process. It is also referred to as a hydraulic pump motor.
  • Valves: To control the liquid flow and relieve disproportionate pressure from the system.

What are the 5 basic components of a hydraulic system?
A basic hydraulic system consists of:
  • Reservoir: This holds the hydraulic fluid (hydraulic oil) and prevents fluid contamination.
  • Hydraulics pump: Pumps the fluid through the system by forcing it from the hydraulic reservoir tank to the rest of the circuit by creating a vacuum at the pump inlet. There are various types of pumps in hydraulics: fixed displacement pumps, variable displacement pumps & manual hydraulic pumps.
  • Electric motor: The motor (or another power source) is necessary to power the hydraulic pump, ensuring the pump’s mechanical elements work.
  • Valves: There are various types of valves, each with specific functions, that control the direction, flow rate and pressure of the hydraulic fluid in the system. Valve types include pressure control valves (pressure relief valve, pressure reducing valve, sequence valve), flow control valves, and directional control valves (check valve, spool-type valve, for e.g.)
  • Hydraulic actuator: this can be a cylinder to create linear motion or a motor to create torque.

  • Piping: Fluid moves through the pipes (hollow straight or curved structures) taking it to all system parts.
