Tectra Automation improves PG Bison production speed with router upgrade

Tectra Automation helped decorative wood specialist PG Bison improve its production speed and increase volume through an upgrade of the company’s 10-year-old router at its Boksburg plant. The scope of work included CAD design, specification of the required equipment, component manufacturing, off-system start up, installation and commissioning.

Tectra Automation upgraded the router’s linear motion system through two Bosch Rexroth CKR 110 compact linear modules with Rexroth drives and controls. The two modules are used to cut both ends of the pressboard simultaneously.

“The new system has significantly improved production speed, completing a pressboard in just 8 seconds, down from a previous cycle length of 22 seconds,” says Cobus Snyman, Divisional Manager Products, Tectra Automation. On top of faster production, the new system has also improved quality, which enhances product consistency and reduces wastage.

Installation and commissioning was carried out over two days, with Tectra Automation’s project team working with PG Bison’s Boksburg plant and maintenance managers to complete the project in the required timeframe.

The CKR compact modules, with integrated ball rail system and toothed belt drive, achieve maximum lengths of 10 000 mm and have repeatability accuracy of up to ± 0.05 mm.

The CKR modules include a pre-tensioned tooth belt and intelligent toothed belt guide that protects inner components. The system is monitored via the Rexroth control system, which provides feedback on heat, speed, location, faults and more via the plant PLC.
