Profile of Hytec Zambia’s recently appointed GM: Raj Karamchand

On 1 September last year, Hytec appointed Raj Karamchand to the position of General Manager, Hytec Zambia.

Ideally suited to the position, Raj has 30 years of hands-on hydraulic experience in terms of skills development, workshop management, hydraulic-component repairs, system design & marketing and general management. This has resulted in Raj acquiring vast product knowledge as well as, importantly, territorial knowledge within the hydraulics industry, making him more than a suitable candidate to fill this managerial position.

Beginning his career as an administration officer with Hydraulic Pump Repairs located in Camperdown, KwaZulu-Natal in the mid-1980s, Raj worked his way up the ladder to Workshop Manager before moving to Avlow Pump Repairs, also in Camperdown, where he was appointed Workshop Manager. Here, he also worked his way up managerial levels to General Manager, which was followed by a move to PEX Hydraulics in Durban where he was also employed as Workshop Manager before transferring to the Cape Town branch covering the same portfolio.

From PEX Cape Town, Raj was promoted and relocated to Zimbabwe to take up the position of Branch Manager for PEX Hydraulics in that country. This was soon followed by another move, this time to Zambia, where he headed the same company as Managing Director, a position he held until his current appointment to Hytec Zambia.

Reporting to the Regional Manager, Adrian Smith, Raj has 12 personnel reporting directly to him and is additionally responsible for developing Hytec Zambia to become the Zambian market leader in the hydraulics field. This encompasses working to capture the majority of the Zambian hydraulics market share, ensuring profitability and motivating personnel to enhanced productivity standards.

Raj completed his Diploma in Electronics / Air-conditioning and Refrigeration. He also completed a hydraulic course with CT Hydraulics and achieved his Diploma in Transport Management and Supervision from M.L Sultan Technical college in Durban, sponsored by Oceanair Shipping and Transport.

His various industry association memberships speak volumes of Raj’s dedication to the industry. He is a member, and immediate Past President, of the Kitwe District Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Past Vice President and Honorary Life Board Member of the Zambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Board Member of the Industry and Agriculture Show Society; and member of the South African Fluid Power Association (SAFPA).

Married to Pravitha, the couple are the proud parents of two graduate sons – Nethin, a chartered accountant and Ashiel, a lawyer. For leisure, Raj admits to being a rugby and soccer fan, watching games rather than participating these days. He is, however, no couch referee and is the Honorary Vice President of Diggers Rugby Club and immediate Past President and Honorary Vice President of the Zambian Rugby Union. When a deserving break is required, Raj says that his and Pravitha’s favourite holiday destination is Mauritius.

Describing his career highlight as “being appointed General Manager to Hytec in Zambia”, he says that “my experience working for Hytec has, this far, been very rewarding in terms of support, experience and the professional manner of interaction, as well as the continuous empowerment drive.”

Hytec is the largest hydraulics company in southern Africa and, through Hytec Group, has 35 branch/representative offices in 11 African countries.
