Verna Simpson is the new Group Human Resources (HR) Executive.

Appointed on 7 March 2018, Verna’s responsibilities are to ensure that the Group’s human capital consistently contributes to the achievement of the overall business performance, as well as maximising returns to shareholders and employees. Part of this is also to ensure the provision of a productive and healthy working environment.

“My role,” Verna enthuses, “includes an exciting opportunity to deliver best practice human resource standards. At an operational level, these duties include providing a strategic and operational HR plan, talent acquisition, development and succession planning, as well as employee recruitment and retention while ensuring inclusion and diversity in the workplace which fosters positive engagement levels.”

More than 2 decades of HR experience across a variety of sectors locally and internationally is what has enabled Verna to develop a globalised HR and systems approach. She began her human resources career in Bloemfontein in the Free State at an FMCG company and says that as her exposure into other industries grew, so did the significance of her responsibilities. “For the past 15 years I have been working for global organisations, which has allowed me to develop a global perspective on HR management.” Verna also accrued experience in cross-border HR projects which, she says, “led me to understand the international and operational dynamics, systems and leadership elements of the HR function.”

In addition to the FMCG industry, Verna has HR experience in the pharmaceuticals, chemicals and performing arts industries, all of it backed by her BA Industrial Psychology degree and various international leadership courses. With a lengthy HR career to date, she cites participating in global HR project teams and harmonising HR processes across Germany, France, the USA, UK and South Africa as one of her career highlights. Others include representing the HR function in changing a global brand; and having major success in recruiting and developing personnel for short-term based operational projects in Angola and other African countries.

Listing Latin dancing, cooking, music festivals and travel as her leisure options, Verna is as diverse in her holidaying destinations as she is in her leisure activities, citing Cape Town, the French Riviera and Berlin as her favourite holiday destinations.

“I try to live in the moment and celebrate what’s right with the world,” she says. “My personal mantra is adopted from one of Maya Angelou’s quotes: ‘People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel’. Based on this, I treat everybody with the same level of respect and dignity, regardless of position and title.”
